Signs your HVAC System Needs to be Replaced

It can be difficult to determine whether you should repair or replace your HVAC system. It may be time to consider replacing your heating and cooling equipment or improving your system’s performance if you notice the following signs listed by Energy Star:

1. Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old

According to Energy Star, replacing an old unit with a new high-efficiency unit can save you up to 20% on heating and cooling costs.

2. Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old

Consider replacing an old furnace or boiler with a new, more efficient one that is Energy Star qualified.

3. Your equipment needs frequent repairs

A Consumer Reports article on repairing versus replacing products suggests following the 50% rule: “Don’t spend more than 50 percent of the cost of a new product on repairing an old one.”

4. Your energy bills are going up

Check to see if your current utility bills are significantly higher than they were during the same season in previous years.

5. Some rooms are too hot or too cold

Uneven temperatures could be caused by “improper equipment operation, duct problems or inadequate insulation”.

6. Humidity problems

If the air in your home is too dry in the winter or too humid in the summer, it could mean there are issues with your equipment or ductwork.

7. Excessive dust

Excessive dust in the home may be caused by leaky ducts.

8. Your heating or cooling system is noisy

Noisy systems may indicate “an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment”.

There are multiple things to consider when you run into problems with your HVAC system. If your HVAC system is relatively new, it probably just needs to be repaired. If it’s old and causing some of the problems listed above, it may be a good idea to replace it.

Trimble

Trimble Job Site Solutions Total Station transfers CAD data to the job site via the Trimble MEP Nomad wireless hand held device. This technological leap eliminates the need for manual measurements on the job site, saving time and reducing costly errors.

VDC

Autodesk Fabrication CADmep and CAMduct are detailing tools used to generate production drawings such as ISO spools, coordination overlays, or 3D spatial coordination with Navis Works. The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) eliminates the inefficiencies of the traditional method of Design-Bid-Build and two-dimensional (2D) drawings by facilitating collaboration among project team members and by illustrating the project design through three-dimensional (3D) visualization.
