Recognizing a Natural Gas Leak

According to the American Gas Association, “There are more than 73 million residential, commercial and industrial natural gas customers in the U.S.”

While millions benefit from using natural gas, it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a gas leak, and what to do and what not to do in case one occurs.

Signs of a Gas Leak

The most telltale sign of a gas leak is the smell of rotten eggs or sulfur. Other signs of a gas leak, as listed by Medical News Today, include:

  • A hissing or whistling sound near a gas line
  • A white cloud or dust cloud near a gas line
  • Bubbles in water
  • A damaged gas pipe
  • Dead houseplants

Medical News Today also lists the physical symptoms people may experience in the event of a gas leak including nausea, chest pain, dizziness and more. Similar symptoms may be experienced by those who have carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be fatal and requires emergency medical treatment. What to Do When a Gas Leak Occurs

The American Gas Association lists the steps you should take in the event of a gas leak:

1. Leave the building immediately and take others with you. If you are outside when you smell the gas, leave the area immediately.

2. Find a phone away from the area and call 911 or your natural gas utility.

3. Follow directions from utility employees or emergency responders who are on site.

What NOT to do When a Gas Leak Occurs

There are certain things that could cause a spark and might cause the gas to explode. The American Gas Association lists things you should avoid in the event of a gas leak:

  • Do not light a match or smoke.
  • Do not turn appliances or lights on or off.
  • Do not use a flashlight.
  • Do not start a car.
  • Do not use a telephone.

Sometimes gas leaks happen, so it’s important to be aware of this information. It’s also important for gas systems to be installed properly. At Action Mechanical, we are licensed to install and repair all types of plumbing systems including natural gas, medical gas, and propane. Autodesk Fabrication CADmep and CAMduct are detailing tools used to generate production drawings such as ISO spools, coordination overlays, or 3D spatial coordination with Navis Works. The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) eliminates the inefficiencies of the traditional method of Design-Bid-Build and two-dimensional (2D) drawings by facilitating collaboration among project team members and by illustrating the project design through three-dimensional (3D) visualization.
